Messina is one of the main places in the world paradigmatic of seismicity, with its millennial history of strong earthquakes, the last of which devastated Northeastern Sicily and southern Calabria on 28 December 1908. Messina University has a strong tradition in seismological and geophysical studies.
In its long history Messina has also been (as all Sicily) the place of mixing of different cultures from the Mediterranean region and outside. Sicily has been the heart of integration of cultures and populations coming from different countries and continents, over the millennia.
For all the above reasons Messina is an ideal place for joint work and study on Geology and Geophysics, with particular reference to earthquakes and seismic risk.
The Cooperation Agreement for teaching and research on seismic risk between Messina, Thessaloniki, Istanbul-Bogazici and Malta Universities is a major opportunity for teachers, researchers and students from worldwide asking competent and productive environments capable to motivate both from the scientific and human point of view.
